Program Overview
Food Frontiers 2021 – Urban Food Systems Innovation Challenge
Food Frontiers 2021 was a global initiative by the FAO and the World Food Forum, supported by GAIN, SUN Business Network, and WFP, to drive youth-led innovation in urban food systems. It empowered young entrepreneurs (aged 18–35) from over 70 countries to develop scalable solutions in sustainable food production, reducing waste, and improving access to healthy diets in cities.
Participants received mentorship, training, and networking support from partners including Turtle Venture, Stellar Value Partners, and SMI Communications. Finalists showcased their innovations at the World Food Forum, gaining visibility and opportunities for implementation.
The challenge highlighted the power of youth innovation in building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban food systems.

Competition Prizes
The 1st Place winner received USD 10,000 in pre-seed funding for equipment and infrastructure, plus a USD 2,500 cash prize.
The 2nd Place winner was awarded USD 7,500 in funding and a USD 1,500 cash prize to support early-stage growth.
The 3rd Place winner received USD 5,000 in funding along with a USD 1,000 cash prize for business development.
